Mavic Ksyrium SLR Wheel

The Ksyrium SLR is only partly in the Mavic Ksyrium line of wheels. That’s because the wheelset comes with only one Ksyrum SLR wheel –the front wheel -  the back wheel is from the very popular R-SYS line. Why? Mavic says it’s because they are so certain the R-SYS TraComp spoke system makes for perfect rear-wheel power transfer that they match it up with ‘old school’ front wheels to make a top-class wheelset at an affordable price.

A perfect match

Mixing the Ksyrium SLR front wheel with the R-SYS rear makes a lot of sense. It takes $200 of the price of a full R-SYS SLR wheelset (a stiff $2000), and only adds 30 grams to the combined wheelset weight to a still speedy 1400g. But just like the R-SYS SLR wheelset, you can choose tubular or clincher, and you get all the latest Mavic technology like Exalith braking surfaces.

And the perfect pairings don’t stop there. Like the rest of the best Mavic wheels, the Ksyrium SLR gets the new SSC wheel-tire treatment – Mavic has come up with an ideal wheel-tire system for maximum stability and low rolling resistance.

Criterum magic

The Mavic Ksyrium SLR, in keeping with the Ksyrium’s reputation, is an ideal wheel for most serious riders.  Not so expensive to be limited to the top riders only, versatile enough for training and racing, and looking as good as Ksyriums should, the SLR wheelset will be a popular upgrade for many serious cyclists.

In our road test though, the Ksyrium SLR just craved the criterium.  They felt stable and super stiff in corners, and shifted every ounce of power from the pedals to the road. Aerodynamic enough for racing, and dynamic enough for sprints, the criterium is yet another perfect match for the Ksyrium SLR.  A slight sluggishness on climbs – a consequence of the weight of the wheelset – disappears on the relatively flat courses and tight turns of a criterium. The Exalith braking surface let our rider race into corners with confidence and control, and the aero features cut through the wind for smooth riding at the front of the pack. It might just be that with the Ksyrium and R-SYS SLR combination Mavic has come up with the perfect criterium wheelset.
