A criterium ("crit") is not a scaled-down road race. It's a short, closed circuit, usually under a mile per lap, with a handful of tight corners the whole field re-accelerates out of every single lap for 30-60 minutes. That format rewards a different wheel than a long road race or a flat time trial: one that comes back up to speed fast, holds a line through a corner without twitchiness, and doesn't punish you for the twentieth hard accel of the night.

What a crit actually demands: repeated hard accelerations out of corners, sustained pack speed on the straights between them, and predictable handling at low speed in a tight group.
