What these 28 comparisons agree on

Read across the whole set and the same three conclusions keep surfacing, which is worth knowing before you read any single page.

Tier beats brand. Seven of these pages compare brands head to head, and in every one the gap between price tiers is larger than the gap between manufacturers at the same tier. The tiers that recur across these comparisons are roughly $300 entry alloy, $1,000 to $1,500 mid, and $2,500 to $4,000 at the top. Pick the tier first, then the badge.

Tires come before wheels. More than one comparison ends with the same recommendation: a tire change is cheaper, faster to feel, and reversible. The wheel upgrade is the second purchase, not the first.

The entry tier has barely moved. A Shimano Ultegra WH-6700 alloy wheelset sold for roughly $650 new in 2010. A comparable mid-tier alloy wheelset today typically runs $300 to $700 per current retailer listings. That is 15 years in which carbon got substantially cheaper without moving the alloy floor much.

Some choices close doors. A hookless rim caps tire pressure at about 72.5 psi, which rules out the 100 psi setups many riders ran for years. Several comparisons here turn on a compatibility limit like that one rather than on performance.
