Most "best wheels" content is written and tested around a rider in the 150-180 lb range. Above roughly 220 lbs, some of that advice stops applying: a wheel that's celebrated as featherweight in a review can be the same wheel a manufacturer quietly rates below your body weight. Every wheel is a compromise between weight and strength. The pattern isn't "all light wheels are bad for heavier riders." It's narrower than that: the specific wheels built around very low spoke counts (16 spokes, sub-400g rims) tend to carry the lowest limits, while wheels built with more spokes or a tougher rim layup, even some fairly light ones, carry high limits or none stated. Spoke count matters because a wheel's strength against side load and impact comes mostly from how many spokes are sharing the work, not just from the rim material. The riskiest category for a heavier rider isn't carbon versus alloy in general, it's specifically ultralight climbing wheels: shallow-rim, low-spoke-count wheels built to shave the last 100-150 grams for racing up mountains. A heavier rider also puts more sustained load through the hub bearings, especially standing out of the saddle where body weight transfers through the pedals in bursts rather than a steady spin. This shows up as bearings wearing out sooner, not as a sudden failure, so it's a maintenance-interval question more than a buying-decision one. Skip any wheelset marketed primarily as an ultralight climbing wheel with a published weight under roughly 1,300g for the pair and a spoke count of 16-20, unless the manufacturer explicitly states a rider weight limit above your own. Skip any wheel whose listing doesn't mention a rider weight limit one way or the other when you're shopping in that ultralight category specifically. Neither caution applies to mid-weight, mid-depth wheels in normal spoke counts (24 and up), which is most of the market.
